Will SafestMail Keep You From Getting A Job?

Do you have an anti-spam or junk email blocker?  SafestMail is an example of that type of system (although I'm certainly not picking on them).  When an unknown email address shows up in the inbox, the sender gets an automatic response that looks like this:

You have sent a message to __________________.

I'm using SafestMail®, an anti-spam/junk email blocker. Your e-mail address is new to my system. Please help identify your email by sending your name and why you're writing.

There is no need to resend your original email message, but if I do not receive this confirmation from you within 5 days, the message will be deleted.

Although it's certainly understandable to want to cut down on spam, job seekers It using spam blockers can miss out on opportunities since senders might not have the time or inclination to verify.  They'll just move on to the next candidate.

Since you never know where your next job lead might come from, you might want to think about skipping the spam-block until after your job search.

Does anyone know of a way around this issue?

Don't Be a "Weiner"!

Be careful what you Tweet!

So his Twitter account wasn't hacked after all... I'm sure you've heard by now that Rep. Anthony Weiner has admitted tweeting that completely inappropriate picture of himself.  Now he's got Nancy Pelosi calling for an ethics investigation.  His career future does not look good.

 

I do not know what it is that makes some people behave that way.  I have never once been even remotely tempted to send a picture of myself in my underwear through cyberspace.  What was he thinking?

I hope everyone understands by now that you can't just post anything you want online--whether it's Facebook, Twitter, or whatever.  It always catches up with you.  People are getting fired over Facebook posts, and having Twitter meltdowns.   Many candidates never get the job because of what employers find when they Google them.

Twitter, like other social media sites,  is fun, and it's useful.  It's a great way to jump start your job search and make you stand out in a positive way as a candidate-- but be careful and use some common sense.

Got Interviews But No Job?

Recently, I worked with a candidate who had no problem getting interviews, but couldn't seem to pull off getting a job offer.

He couldn't figure out what the issue was--he was a strong candidate, very qualified and extremely well-spoken.  But he wasn't getting any job offers.  He hired me as a career coach to help him figure out what he could possibly be doing wrong.

Turned out, it wasn't what he was doing....it's what he WASN'T doing that was holding him back.

Job Interview Role Play: "Can you sell me this pen?"

Many, many job interviews have a version of role-play that they use for interview questions.  In the most general sense, it's a "What would you do in this situation?" kind of question.  It's strongly related to the whole behavioral interview process.  Hiring managers want to get a better picture of what life will look like when you're on the job. 

In sales jobs of all kinds, the stereotypical question is "Can you sell me this pen?"  (One of the most hated job interview questions...)

Because there are so many different kinds of sales jobs, and because this particular situation gives you a good idea of the thought process of hiring managers who want to incorporate role play in the interview, I'm going to go through the process of "selling a pen" to the hiring manager in the video below.
